We worshiped on the lawn when weather and COVID-19 rates permitted. On Good Friday, families participated in Stations of the Cross outdoors, aided by audio recordings for each station available on our app. Christmas Eve and Easter pilgrimages provided opportunities to visit the sanctuary, beautifully decorated and filled with music. Some of these creative new events will surely become beloved traditions.

Press Release Service
Until July of 1887, the church was without stove, chancel furniture and window glass. The church was consecrated on July 28, 1887 during which a number of clergy participated, as the Convocation of Charlotte was in session. On July 24, 1887 seventeen persons were confirmed at the church’s first Confirmation service. In 1891, the name of the church was changed from “Church of the Holy Comforter” to Christ Church. The sacraments are outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace, given by Christ as sure and certain means by which we receive grace. The two great sacraments are Holy Baptism and the Holy Eucharist.

Prior to becoming a priest, Joan served in the United States Navy and Navy Reserve. Originally from Norfolk, Elizabeth moved to Seattle after graduating from the University of Virginia. In the Pacific Northwest, Elizabeth was a middle school teacher, the Director of Christian Formation at Epiphany Parish, and an active co-op preschool parent and community member. Along with her husband Dave and their three children, she returned to the east coast in 2020 to attend The Virginia Theological Seminary. She can be found sharing meals, on the soccer sidelines, and wherever she can traverse the highs and lows of life together with others.
Our commitment to racial justice and reconciliation was strengthened as we witnessed the pain of our sisters and brothers of color. Jesus is our savior, but we were also saved by technology this year! Christ Church is currently offering one online service of prayer, hymns and a sermon, each Sunday at 9 a.m. Church leaders describe the new position as a ministry of presence, charged with addressing the array of issues that contribute to a person’s health — mental and otherwise. Today, the church refers families to HopeWay, and the facility’s medical staff has spoken at the church. The congregation has supported HopeWay financially, Blue said — including a grant to bring in Theo, a therapy dog.
Despite its growing support of mental health, the congregation was shocked by the rash of suicides. Among the dead was a 20-year-old college student, a 51-year-old businessman and father of two who was active in the church, and the Kocmonds’ son Nathan. As Scholar-in-Residence, Dr. Suzanne Watts Henderson teaches, preaches, and serves as a resource for the clergy and spiritual formation teams to foster deeper spiritual growth across the whole parish.
The church building had been under construction for three years. It was undertaken and completed by several families in the area, including the Lash and Hairston families. Cora Futon received the first baptism in the church on June 20, 1886. Established in 1886, our mission is to serve God joyfully, faithfully and actively through family, congregational and community ministries. Small groups are invited to walk through chapters of America’s history of race, racism, and whiteness while weaving in threads of family story, economic class, and political and regional identity.
The 10-part series is built around a powerful online curriculum of documentary films and readings that focus on Indigenous, Black, Latino, and Asian/Pacific American histories as they intersect with European American histories. OUR MISSIONTo engage, equip and empower people to love God, care for each other and serve the world in the name of Christ. But he also notes that there’s a difference between being included and truly belonging. He urges congregations to ask themselves whether they truly welcome the mentally ill into the life of the church and let them know they have a place in God’s home. Besides offering people opportunities to share their life challenges, Christ Church seeks to equip them with information and resources, to direct them toward help, and to encourage them not to suffer in silence. In the Church, features guest musicians, candlelight, sermon, poetic prayers from Enriching our Worship and a more informal atmosphere.
This series is especially designed to help white people talk with other white people, while being open to all racial/ethnic groups. Participants are invited to peel away the layers that have contributed to the challenges and divides of the present day – all while grounded in our call to faith, hope and love. Thinking back to that turning-point Sunday at Christ Church, she recalls that people seemed relieved to share their stories.
In addition to her strong passion for outreach, Joan likes being outdoors while hiking, gardening, and participating in community service. She also enjoys traveling, cooking, reading, and spending time with her two cats. From the beginning, the church has raised the question of how we relate to each other, Kinghorn said.
